So yesterday we attended a bridal show at the Terrace Banquet hall. Complete failure. Less than 50 couples over 2 days. Hundreds of dollars spent. Portraits moved and bumped. But most importantly – Time wasted.

There are many people who read this blog. From Excellence Photography wedding couples, friends, competition and family to TorontoHomeMovies.com, FlordiaHomeMovies.com, MontrealHomeMovies.com, or even our newest addition USHomeMovies.com. (welcome Denver!! Hello Matthew the squid!).

Each of you who read this bloghave only 24 hours in a day. Most sleep 7-8 hours leaving 12 hours in a day. So 12 hours a day say 6 days a week = 72 hours. Lets subtract 12 hours for eating, and personal things. (Tim you subtract an extra 4 hours for bathroom time).

That leaves about 60 hours. About 10 hours a day. Seems like a lot. But you know its not! I lost 20 hours on the show yesterday and the day before. In fact, this morning I had to drive to the studio to unload my car, and it cost me another hour.  So when people ask me why I don’t use the phone. (Here is a link from 2006) or when my employees wonder why I only get upset when they keep me waiting, you will know that its because I value my time!!!

Seriously!

The way I look at appointments I make is that when I agree to meet my lawyer at 9am. I expect him there at 9am. The same goes for me though. If I make an appointment to consult the archivist for a iconic family on the proper ways to restore a famous photo, or convert their 16mm family archives I will be on time. Early even. Heck I always show up to the grooms house at least 7 minutes early.

So the other day we had an appointment for a quote to put in hardwood floors at the studio. He was an hour late.  I kicked him out. If he can’t arrive on time, how can I be sure he will do a good job? Do I want someone who respects my time so poorly to work for me?? How can I trust him?

It’s like this. An appointment is a verbal contract:

I being of sound mind and body entrust you (hosting the event) to meet me at said time. In this agreement we both will arrive at prearranged time so as to not waste our most precious resource. In the event either party is held up, for any reason, a telephone call, email or flying airplane with a banner behind it will be dispatched to advise the other party.

It is understood that both parties enter into this agreement as equals and have determined the event to be of such importance that a meeting must take place. In the event that one party feels that this meeting is a waste of time, said party will contact the other party and cancel within at least 2 hours of the meeting event, unless unable to do so due to circumstances beyond their control.
